Willy Wonka, Jr. at The Rep

By Sandra Ozaki, Publisher Macaroni Kid North Little Rock June 26, 2019

I remember watching Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (1971) as a kid amazed by all the candies and treats. I mean, who wouldn't want to swim in a river of chocolate? A magical factory with countless rooms filled with surprises and tasty concoctions would tempt anyone. Five golden tickets, a tour of the mysterious factory, and the chance to win a lifetime supply of chocolate brought five lucky children from around the world together. They eventually fall prey to their own greed, disregarding warnings of danger while their helpless parents stood by. In the end, Mr. Wonka (who will forever be Gene Wilder in my mind) reveals that the whole contest has been a farce. Seeking an heir, he created the ultimate test of character, and the only one to pass was Charlie.

Now, fast-forward to 2019 and Willy Wonka, Jr., the latest offering from The Arkansas Repertory Theatre in Little Rock. This production and its cast of 39 young performers is selling out shows and delighting audiences. One of many Broadway Junior shows, Willy Wonka, Jr. adapts Roald Dahl's classic story into a condensed version designed for a younger cast. Adults and youngsters alike will enjoy this fast-moving performance directed and choreographed by Anna Kimmel, that hits the highlights and get to the point of the story without getting bogged down by overly developed characters or extensive special effects.

A simple, set design with open scaffolding allows the space and flexibility for imaginations to soar. Like little children following the Pied Piper, we are led deep into the wondrous factory by Mr. Wonka. The great thing about performances at The Rep is that the every last detail has been considered. Props and set pieces help the audience transition from scene to scene. Nothing is over the top, but the tricks of the trade are definitely in play as the naughty children meet their fate.

In this show, less is more, and it works. The featured dancers and ensemble play a key role in creating the illusion of magic and wonder. With movements reminiscent of Cats, they weave through the set, unseen by everyone except the audience and Mr. Wonka, the ring master of a colorful circus of sweets and top-secret treats. Mr. Wonka, played skillfully by Will Porter, appears on the city streets selling candy to children from a cart. Unbeknownst to Charlie, Mr. Wonka himself sells him the chocolate bar containing the fifth golden ticket. And so the adventure begins!

Willy Wonka Jr. plays through June 30th. Tickets can be purchased online at: https://therep.org or in person at the box office, 601 Main St., Little Rock 72203.
