What do you think of when you picture your ideal summer vacation? A little sun and surf? Boating on the lake? Cleaning out the garage? Wait a minute! How did that get in there? My mind must be playing tricks on me. It must be because August is right around the corner and my favorite day of summer used to be the first day of school. The one day that I could put something away and it would stay there. All. Day. Amazing, right?
There is no denying that our belongings can accumulate to uncomfortable levels if we don't keep up with them. Kind of like stepping on the scale after an indulgent vacation in Vegas. So what's the secret to keeping it all under control? Sadly, there is no magic trick unless you are willing to outsource life. There are, however, a lot of different systems to organize your possessions, but the one you really need is going to be something we tend to avoid, consistent effort over time. We have to discipline ourselves to do the deed and purge on a regular basis, commit to not bringing more things into our homes and vehicles than necessary, and learn to live without the latest gadgets and toys.
So whether it's pool floats, shoes, magazines, or toys that come alive when we're not looking (sorry, Woody!) they either serve a function or purpose in our lives or they don't. If they do, great. And if they don't, well it's hasta la vista baby. The challenge is finding a place for these items in our home and then making sure they are always put back in their proper place. I seriously wish I had a magic wand. But when you find things older than most of your children...yeah. It's time. I say this because I want you to know that it's ok. It doesn't have to be done in a day. Like most anything in life, the hard part is starting. And once it is done, there's an incredible feeling that makes you wonder why you put it off for so long.
July is my favorite month for taking care of all the things that need attention. Home repair, taking donations to Goodwill, deep cleaning, and the most important one of all, making sure my self-care habits are in place before we go back to school. I am determined to get my health and wellness on solid ground and lose the baby weight before she officially becomes a teenager. If you can relate, you may want to follow the story on Twitter @MacaroniKidNLR. But first, Summer called and said she needed me to come over for a minute, so I'll let you get back to your BBQ while I enjoy a little sunshine before the rain rolls back in.
And don't forget to look ahead in the Event Calendar for Fall events. They're starting to pop up and we like to add them as soon as we can so you can save the dates. If you know of an upcoming event, feel free to submit it on the website, send me an email, or Message us on Facebook. We'd love to share it with everyone!
Aloha,
Sandra
